Site of the Week, first week of October, 2001 says: "With everything
thats going on now, we got to thinking that theres a lot we dont
know about the world. We therefore set out on a quest to find some websites where
we could learn more. We hit the jackpot with this weeks featured site, Geography
World. Created by Mr. Brad Bowerman, a teacher at Lakeland High School in Jermyn,
Pa., Geography World is a veritable portal of everything geographic. More so,
however, it presents the material in a fun and different way, such that you want
to spend some time exploring the various nooks and crannies and secret pathways
built into the site.
Besides some of the usual topics that youd expect
to find on a geography website, Geography World has a number of special geography-related
topics. Here are just a few of them:
Agriculture/Farming
Ancient Culture
Ecosystems/Biomes
Flags
GIS/GPS
Geography Games
Pennsylvania
Geography
A key benefit of Geography World is the way it is organized. Like
a roadmap, the home page is divided into a grid pattern, with numbers and letters
to identify the grid points. So, if you want to tell someone where to find, for
example, some information about Africa, all you need to say is Go to E4
on the home page. Geography World also has a good search function. We searched
on the term Pittsburgh and came up with several hits, all of which
were highly relevant.
Besides searching, some of the other things you can
do on the Geography World site are translate pages into other languages, view
visitor statistics by country, and get a Geography World banner. You can also
find out more about Mr. Bowerman, the creator of the site, and try your hand at
some of the electronic jigsaw puzzles hes created (very cool!). But theres
much more, believe usyoull just have to check it out for yourself."
WWW4teachers says: "Geography World was created by Brad Bowman under the philosophy "You are nowhere without geography!" Brad is a teacher at Lakeland High School in Pennsylvania. This award winning site features a plethora of geography resources about news, culture, weather, maps, time, conservation, ecosystems/biomes, natural resources/energy and more! Students can visit the site to get homework help, conduct research, or study for a test. The site even has it's own search engine to make finding what you need quick and easy! If your looking for fun geography activities, have your students test their knowledge playing some online geography games! Aside from being a great resource for all geography lovers, this site also serves as a resource for Brad's students to find homework asignments, contact him, or find practice tests and study resources specifically for his class."
Titusville Middle School, Titusville,
PA, Mr. Jon Herman says: "Want to know where I'm surfing? Check
these out. I can't recommend Geography World enough either.
Geography World - a long time ago I thought about creating
a web page that had valuable web resouces and links from across the internet.
A vast cornocopia of valuable sites and resources if you will. Then
I found out that Mr. Bowerman had beaten me to the punch. This site is incredible
and many of my own academic links come directly from his site. However,
whereas I will never have more than a dozen, this man has thousands upon thousands
of great sites and resources. All hail Geography World!"
Skewl Sites - The Best of Educational Web Sites says: "YOUR SEARCH FOR ANY TOPIC related to geography just became a snap thanks to a web site entitled GEOGRAPHY WORLD created by high school teacher Brad Bowerman. This site provides access to a large amount of information and to many different aspects of geography. The contents are separated into topics such as erosion, plate tectonics, and weather and also covers issues such as population, the environment, and conservation. Under each topic there is an extensive collection of web links specific to that topic. For example, under the topic "Human Cultures" you can refine your search to a specific region or continent, and choose from a list of related links. This is a "must bookmark" site for all social studies as well as elementary school teachers."
Britannica.com says: Rating: **** (Superior) "Massive collection of links for teachers and students at all levels. Covers every aspect of geography, with topics such as erosion, weather, and ecosystems; issues such as population, the environment, and conservation; and geographical resources, featuring journals and career information. Also contains links to maps, games, photos, quizzes, and interactive field trips."
Coyle's says: "You will never believe this site! It was designed by a public school teacher from Pennsylvania. There is so much here that I can't begin to summarize! Some Examples: US Geography (State Information, US Maps, US Geography games, US City information), Time (How did ancient cultures keep calendars?), World Geography (maps, games to play for an opportunity to win things), Maps and Globes, Ancient Cultures. Want to learn about some of the cultures in Asia or elsewhere in the World? He has links to them here. If you can't find what you are looking for here, the WWW probably doesn't have it!"
Information Sources for Children says: "Purpose:
This web site was created for students in Brad Bowerman's geography classes.
It is useful for all students who may be studying geography.
Authority:
Brad Bowerman is a teacher a Lakeland High School in Jermyn, Pennsylvania.
As a teacher, he knows the needs of students and he has carefully collected
Internet resources for the use of his students. One of his link pages is
a series of reviews by well known entities like the NEA, the Discovery Channel,
the School Page, Education Index, and Resource Central. In 1997, Education World
named it the "Best of '97."
Scope: This site links to over a
thousand other geography resources. Its scope is amazingly complete with
many different subject headings within the broad heading of geography.
Format:
The home page is set up with a table of contents with thirty-two sections.
Each section takes the reader to a different aspect of the subject. Under
the table of contents is a search box that is easily identifiable for quick reference.
Entries: When the student clicks on one of the topic headings in
the table of contents, he is taken to an annotated list of related web sites.
The annotations are very brief, but helpful. There are few broken
links in the examination samples taken for this writing. (There is a plea
for the reporting of broken links on each topical page.) There are also
links to interactive activities like quizzes, challenges and games.
Use:
This site could be very useful for teachers and serious students of
geography. The site promotes critical thinking as well as a place to find
facts. The NEA says, "This would make an excellent resource for all geography
teachers where they will find information on the five themes of geography and
national geography standards."
Critique: The site is very friendly,
with the personal information about Bowerman and his school. However, it
is also distracting from the subject at hand. The graphics are interesting
and appealing to students. The reviews of this site rave about the varied
subjects covered and the many links offered. The variety of information,
fun and activities make this a site to be bookmarked by those who work with students."
David L. Stoloff, Ph.D. (Professor and Chair, Education Department) Eastern Connecticut State University says: "A wonderful site that provides a chart of links by topics. There are links to cultures around the world: Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Africa, as well as the United States and Canada. There are also links to environmental issues."
Pat Thorburn of Rolling Meadows High School says: "This is a great site, created by a Pennsylvania high school geography teacher. It is a vast collection of well organized links to such sites as ArabNet, National Geographic, GeoWorld Quizzes, the CIA World Factbook and literally thousands of others. In my world geography classes I often have students research countries and this site has links to sites with great information on every country in the world. In fact, there are many links for each country. The site is vast and requires some serious time to first navigate. But the time spent searching will be well worth it to provide your students an organized and convenient place to find information."
The Lewis Mumford Center for Comparative Urban and Regional Research says: "Geography World includes a bookstore where browsers may purchase books, atlases, almanacs, and software. An extensive site with various search engines, Geography World provides free information on such topics as: U.S. cities; agriculture and farming; U.S., African, Latin American, and Asian geography; as well as information on travel and recreation, mapping skills, homework help, trivia and quizzes, and more."
